The Las Vegas Review-Journal has covered the downtown Las Vegas entertainment venue taking shape at 814 S. 3rd Street — and the unusually broad coalition of local artists, companies, and one very well-known headliner behind it.

Columnist John Katsilometes reported on how a shuttered eight-screen multiplex is being rebuilt as a cultural incubator: a 250-seat proscenium theatre, a 150-seat black box, two 60-seat screening rooms, a 400-person event and rehearsal hall, and a media production studio, all under one roof.

Who is behind it

The story names the group assembling the campus — Daz Weller and Vegas Theatre Company, Ginger Land-van Buuren of Vegas City Opera, Robert Lee and Kelsey Borlan of Laugh After Dark, and architect Alexia Chen — alongside resident companies including the Las Vegas Sinfonietta. Teller, of Penn & Teller, is among the venue’s most recognizable supporters.

This scale of space gives new artists a chance to be seen in the best possible light, with the best possible support.

The problem the campus is built to solve

The piece captures the argument at the center of the project as plainly as anyone has put it.

We’ve been exporting our talent and importing our culture. It’s time to reverse that.

Daz Weller, CEO, THIRD Street

Without permanent, affordable infrastructure, Las Vegas keeps losing the artists it trains. A shared campus changes that math: rehearsal, performance, production, and education stop being four separate rent problems and become one address.

Where the project stands

The Review-Journal reported a $5 million fundraising target for the full build-out and operations. You can read more about the campus, see how the Founders Society works, or support the build.
